CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior Matt Massingale struck out a career-high 10 batters in a complete game to lead the Washington baseball team to an 8-3 win over Oregon State in a Pac-10 Conference game Saturday at Goss Stadium.
Massingale, a right-hander from Kennewick, Wash., evened his record at 5-5 as he gave up only seven hits (all singles), two earned runs and walked four in his fourth complete game of the season. He out-dueled Oregon State starter Scott Nicholson (6-6), who struck out eight in eight innings of work.
The Huskies (20-22 overall, 4-10 Pac-10) scored a run with two outs in the first when Tyler Davidson singled home Jay Garthwaite. In the third, OSU tied it when Will Hudson's groundout plated Eric Stark. The Beavers (25-20, 6-8 Pac-10) went in front 2-1 in the third when Stark drove in a run with a bases-loaded infield single.
Washington took the lead back in the fifth as Davidson came through with two outs once again. After Tila Reynolds had reached on a bunt single and Erickson had blooped a double to shallow left field, Davidson pulled a double down the left field line to drive in both runners and give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.
Erickson, the UW's career home runs leader, added to the total in the Husky half of the eighth when he led off with a home run to right center. With eight homers this year, he has 39 for his career. Washington batted around in the ninth inning, scoring four runs to pad the lead.
Erickson finished the day 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. Davidson went 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. Reynolds and Rittenhouse added two singles apiece. Catcher Bryan Ingram was the only Beaver with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with a couple of singles.
The Huskies and Beavers close out the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
