CORVALLIS, Ore. - After giving up a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to fall behind, 10-9, Oregon State scored two in the bottom of the ninth to hand the Washington baseball team an 11-10 loss in a Pac-10 game Sunday at Goss Stadium.
The win gave the Beavers (26-20 overall, 7-8 in the Pac-10) their third straight series win in conference, each one two games to one. Washington, which has yet to win a league series this season, fell to 20-23 overall and 4-11 in Pac-10 play.
In the ninth, OSU loaded the bases with three singles off of Husky reliever Brian Barton (0-1) to load the bases with one out. Pinch hitter Tim Dryden hit a ground ball to first baseman Ed Erickson, who mishandled it to let the tying run score. Erickson then threw wide to Barton covering first base and Chris Biles came across with the winning run.
Washington entered the ninth inning down 9-6. Matt Hollod led off with a solo home run and, after a walk to Tila Reynolds and a single from Todd Linden, Garthwaite came up with two down and belted a towering home run deep over the left field fence, his eighth of the year.
Mark Newell (6-4), who gave up the lead in the ninth, nonetheless picked up the win. Newell had retired the first six UW hitters he had faced.
Joe Gerber belted a solo home run and a double to lead OSU. The homer gave him 62 runs batted in on the season, tying the OSU record, held by Jim Wilson (1982) and Rob Colley (1998).
Linden went 3-for-5 with three singled to lead the UW offense and extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Hollod and catcher Jefferson Thiel added two hits each for the Huskies.
The Huskies have the next five days off before taking on Washington State in a three-game series at Husky Ballpark next Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Due to graduation at WSU, Saturday's series opener will begin at 6:30 p.m., instead of 1:00 p.m. as listed on early schedules.
