ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Lesle Gallimore registered her 100th coaching victory on Sunday as the 17th-ranked Washington women's soccer team defeated Ohio State 3-1 to win the Nike Invitational women's soccer tournament at Michigan Soccer Field.
In her 11th year of coaching, Gallimore's career record improved to 100-76-14. She has compiled a 68-51-5 mark in seven seasons at Washington, including four NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Huskies (6-0) are off to the best start in the 10-year history of the program, having outscored opponents by a combined 21-3 margin. Ohio State evened its record at 3-3.
Washington trailed for the first time this season as the Buckeyes opened the scoring at 10:50 on a 10-yard shot by Lindsay Eckles.
Senior Theresa Wagner (Lakeside HS) evened the score for UW 10 minutes later. She headed in a cross from Caroline Putz from 16 yards away at 20:16.
The Huskies' sister tandem of Tami and Melissa Bennett accounted for the final two goals.
Tami, a senior, scored what proved to be the game-winner at 22:51. The unassisted five-yard blast was her team-leading sixth goal of the season. It was Tami's 24th career goal, drawing her within three of Tara Bilanski's (1992-95) school scoring record of 27.
Melissa, a freshman, received a cross from Putz five yards from the goal. She booted it into the net at 30:57 for her third goal of the season. Melissa is the all-time Washington state prep scoring leader, amassing 166 career goals at Seattle Christian High School to eclipse the previous record of 152 established by Tami.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo (Richland HS) recorded two saves for Washington which outshot the Buckeyes 29-3. OSU's Amber Barnes had six saves.
"They really didn't get any chances in the second half and we almost added another goal," Gallimore remarked about the scoreless second half. "We controlled the game and did what it took to win."
The Huskies remain on the road, visiting Portland, Ore. next weekend for a pair of games in the Adidas Invitational. Washington takes on No. 2 Notre Dame on Saturday and San Diego State on Sunday.
