ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Senior midfielder Theresa Wagner became the school's all-time assist leader, setting up the first two goals Friday for 17th-ranked Washington during a 4-0 victory over Michigan in the first round of the Nike Invitational women's soccer tournament at U-M Soccer Field.
The Huskies improved to 5-0, extending the best start in the 10-year history of the program. Washington has outscored opponents by a combined 18-2 margin. Michigan, an NCAA Tournament qualifier each of the last three seasons, dropped to 0-3.
A product of Seattle's Lakeside High School, Wagner increased her career assist total to 21. That figure breaks the previous UW record of 20 assists established by Tara Bilanski (1992-95).
Wagner now owns every Husky assist record, including the school's single-game standard of four that she established on Aug. 23 against Eastern Washington. She already has seven assists this year, tying the single-season record she set in 1999.
Junior Caroline Putz opened the scoring against Michigan at 5:39, taking a pass from Wagner and connecting from 12 yards out for her team-leading fifth goal. The scored remained 1-0 throughout the first half.
Senior Tami Bennett (Seattle Christian HS) converted a Wagner pass from five yards away at 57:41, tying Putz with her fifth goal of the season. Bennett was credited with an assist at 65:56 after passing to Blair Ruport for a 15-yard goal, her first collegiate tally.
Junior Malia Arrant capped the scoring in the 68th minute, one-timing a 25-yard blast after a failed attempt by the Wolverine defense to clear the ball.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo (Richland HS) and senior Leslie Weeks combined to record the save. Solo started in goal and made one save in 74 minutes before giving way to Weeks. Carissa Stewart registered six saves for Michigan which was outshot 18-13.
Seventh-year Washington coach Lesle Gallimore notched the 99th victory of her 11-year career. She goes for win No. 100 on Sunday when the Huskies meet Ohio State in the Nike Invitational championship game. The Buckeyes (3-2) defeated Missouri 3-2 in the other first-round matchup.
