Huskies Shutout #11 Alabama 8-0 In 5 Innings
March 02, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #1 Washington Huskies exploded early and coasted to a big 8-0 win over #11 Alabama Friday night, earning the win in Washington's first game of the Husky Classic. Sis Bates went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI in the game, while Kirstyn Thomas and Julia DePonte each driving in multiple runs.
Gabbie Plain moved to 6-0 in her collegiate career with another shutout, blanking Alabama over 5.0 innings. The freshman got stronger as the game went along, striking out the side in the fifth to finish the game with six consecutive batters retired.
Washington's offense was alive from the start, picking up three runs in the first inning and four more in the second against Alabama's Alexis Osorio, who had a 0.67 ERA entering the game. Bates stole second in the first inning only to trot home a few pitches later on DePonte's home run to left-center field that made it 2-0.
Emma Helm would record her first career extra-base hit in the first inning with her double to center. She would score on a throwing error as Taryn Atlee stole second and was hit with the throw, which careened into center.
The Crimson Tide would threaten in the second inning as the first two batters reached scoring position. Plain locked them down from there, getting three straight outs without allowing the runners to advance.
The Huskies would reward Plain's work on the mound with another big inning, putting up four in the second. The first six batters of the inning reached base, with Bates driving in two and Thomas picking up two RBI of her own with a single.
Bates would launch a huge home run over the rightfield wall to end the game in the fifth, giving Washington its 12th run-rule victory and 19th consecutive win.
