Huskies Drop Opener At USC, 6-2
April 05, 2024 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – Sloppy play in the field proved costly for the Washington baseball team on Friday as the Huskies dropped the opening game of their series with USC 6-2 at OC Great Park.
Jared Engman was charged with the loss, allowing four runs over 4.2 innings
The Huskies took an early lead in the third, as Colin Blanchard's leadoff double was cashed in by Jeter Ybarra, sending an RBI double up the middle to open scoring for the night.
However, the Trojans struck back with two runs in the fourth, adding two more runs in the fifth.
The Dawgs threatened to cut into the deficit in the seventh, putting two runners on with one out, but failed to cash in. The next half inning, a miscue in right led to another Trojan run.
Aiva Arquette got a run back for the Huskies with a leadoff homer in the eighth, but another defensive misplay in the bottom half put USC back up four.
Washington loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but couldn't rally.
Washington will look to even up the series on Saturday, returning to OC Great Park for a rematch at 2 p.m. PT. The game will be available for streaming on USC Live Stream.
