Huskies Fall to No. 51 Liberty in Day One of Diablo Invitational

TEMPE,Ariz. - The University of Washington Men's Tennis Team drops a tightly contested match with Liberty University, 4-1, this evening from Tempe, Arizona, in the Diablo College Invitational. The Huskies return to play tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 28th, with a slate of matches against Tulane University at 9 a.m. and another to be determined upon the conclusion of tomorrows' early slate of matches.Β Β
Washington's first ranked matchup of the season ended with a 4-1 loss, as four of six singles matches went the full three-set maximum. While from doubles, two matches went to the tiebreak, with No. 42 Brett Pearson/Soham Purohit's match ending in a 6-6(7) DNF and Nikola Plavsic/Stephane Kamendje's ending 6(3)-7, after the Dawgs dropped an early doubles match 2-6.Β Β
The Huskies fell behind early in the first set, with only Soham Purohit able to capture a set victory, with Stephane Kamendje and Brett Pearson each reaching a tiebreak in the set.Β
Compete Mode, as Coach Esmail has dubbed it, was activated in the second set, as the Dawgs roared back to life with five of the six matches in the set being won with freshmen Daniel Bien and Hyeonseok Seo responding from a set one 2-6 and 3-6Β loss with their own 6-3 and 7-5 victories.Β
Well into the third set, Washington was able to get on the board as Soham Purohit defeated Siwanat Auytayakul 6-3 in the final set. Shortly after this the Huskies would drop the fourth point while Purohit's playing partner, Brett Pearson, had his opponent, Benjamin Sparks, on the ropes 6-5 in his own second set.Β
The Huskies will return to play tomorrow at 9 a.m. with a full slate of games starting with the Green Wave of Tulane University.Β Β Β
