Softball Defeats Minnesota 8-6 In Return To Montlake

SEATTLE – In front of 1,469 fans at Husky Softball Stadium, the No. 19 softball team (32-9, 13-0 Big Ten) came out with a bang in its return to Montlake, defeating Minnesota 8-6 on Friday night.
Taking game one of the series gave Washington its 13th Big Ten win of the season, its most since joining the conference two years ago.
Four Huskies recorded multiple hits on the night, led by Kaycie Burdick who went 3-for-4 as the leadoff hitter.
Alexis DeBoer blew the game wide open in the third inning and helped the Huskies strike first, blasting a three-run home run for her 14th homer of the season.
Minnesota scored two in the top of the fourth, a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout that brought the score to 3-2.
Washington went off for four runs in the bottom half of the fourth, ballooning the lead to a 7-2 margin.
Ava Carroll led off with an infield single on the very first pitch of the inning. Melody Acevedo reached on a Gopher fielding error, followed by a single from Sophi Mazzola that loaded the bases. Marley Teasley then reached on a fielder's choice that helped bring home Carroll.
Burdick knocked in an RBI single to bring in Mazzola, while Teasley scored thanks to another Minnesota fielding error.
Minnesota scored two in each of the following innings with a pair in the fifth and a pair in the sixth courtesy of a home run in the fifth and an RBI double and single in the sixth.
DeBoer notched her second hit of the day in the form of an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to score the eighth Husky run.
Washington and Minnesota will play game two of the series on Saturday, April 11 at Husky Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
