SEATTLE - The Washington and Gonzaga baseball teams split a doubleheader at Husky Ballpark Saturday. The Zags took game one, 7-3, before the Huskies rallied to win game two, 10-8.
Washington's record now stands at 3-5 while the Bulldogs are 4-3.
The Huskies hitting woes continued in game one. The Dawgs, who struck out 19 times in Friday's win over the Zags, were fanned 14 times in eight innings by game one starter Barry Matthews (2-0). Matthews allowed only one earned run on six hits for the victory.
UW starter Mike Bomar (0-2) suffered the loss in game one, surrendering four earned runs in two innings. Both Matthews, hitting for himself, and first baseman Adam Stokey drove in a pair of runs in the opener. The UW got two hits and two runs batted in from senior Ed Erickson.
In game two, the Huskies entered their half of the sixth inning down 8-4, but scored six runs on only four hits. Two runs came a bases-loaded wild pitch and a bases-loaded balk. Michael Done's groundout scored Tim Rice with the tying run and Todd Linden's sacrifice fly plated the go-ahead score.
Husky starter Matt Massingale (1-1) fanned nine Zags over six innings for the victory. Husky closer Taylor Grant worked the final two innings for his second save in two days. GU reliever Matt Siwek (0-1) suffered the loss.
In the nightcap, Erickson led the Husky offense with two doubles. Jason Bay hit a three- run homer, the first by a Bulldog this season, while Jared Hertz posted two doubles and two RBI for the Zags.
The Huskies and Zags close out the four-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
