SEATTLE - The Oregon State baseball team used 22 hits, including five home runs, to hand Washington a 27-4 rout in a non-conference game Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
Right fielder Rod Gott hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, while second baseman Zach Gordon belted two homers, a double and a triple in five at bats to lead the Beavers (7-6). Washington, which lost its third straight, fell to 3-8 on the year.
Several other Beavers had big days at the plate. Third baseman Brian Barden went 4-for-7 with five runs scored, a double, a homer and three RBI. Left fielder Josh Carter batted 4- for-6 with four runs and four RBI. Andy Jarvis also homered for the Beavers.
Gott finished the day 2-for-6 with six RBI while Gordon, who entered the game batting only .111, went 4-for-5 with four runs and five runs batted in.
The Huskies scored three of their runs in the bottom of the ninth when freshman right fielder Tyler Davidson belted a three-run homer, the first hit of his college career.
OSU starter Scott Nicholson improved to 2-2 with the win. He allowed only three hits and one run in seven innings, striking out 10. UW starter Mike Bomar (0-3) gave up eight earned runs in three and two-thirds. Of the six Husky pitchers, only sophomore Randy Vanderplow managed to handle the Beaver bats, throwing a no-hit inning of relief.
The Huskies take on Portland Tuesday at Pilots Stadium before taking a week and a half off for finals. The next action after the Portland game is a three-game series against Dayton at Husky Ballpark, beginning March 17.
