SEATTLE - Senior forward Tami Bennett amassed three goals in the first half and added a second-half assist, helping the Washington women's soccer team equal its largest scoring output ever with an 8-0 victory over Eastern Washington in the season opener at Husky Soccer Field.
Washington's (1-0) eight-goal outburst matched the school record for both single-game goals and winning margin established Sept. 3, 1994 against Gonzaga.
Bennett opened the scoring in the ninth minute, beginning the pursuit of her second career hat trick and the 10th in Husky history. She pushed her career total to 21 goals, drawing within five of Tara Bilanski's (1992-95) school scoring record of 27.
Senior Theresa Wagner (Lakeside HS) distributed four assists and scored Washington's fourth goal, an unassisted blast at 27:32. She assisted on Bennett's third tally at 29:17 that gave UW a 5-0 lead it took into halftime.
Junior Caroline Putz (Bountiful, Utah) collected two goals and one assist. She scored the Huskies' second goal at 12:17 and netted goal No. 7 at 76:49. Her pass in the 27th minute set up Bennett's second goal.
Neither team scored in the opening 21 minutes of the second half before Tami's sister, Melissa Bennett, notched her first collegiate goal at 66:30. A freshman, Melissa was a prolific scorer at Seattle Christian High School with a Washington state prep record 166 career goals. She broke Tami's state scoring record of 152 goals.
Junior Erin Otagaki capped the scoring in the 89th minute, converting a Wagner pass with a 12-yard strike.
Obscured in the offensive fireworks was the fact that Husky goalkeepers Hope Solo and Leslie Weeks combined for a shutout. Solo was credited with one save while Weeks was not required to stop a shot after entering at the beginning of the second half.
Starting goalkeeper Jonna Melton registered seven saves and reserve Katie Grothkopp had five for the Eagles who were outshot 37-2.
Washington hosts 19th-ranked Brigham Young on Tuesday at 7 p.m. That marks the first night game ever at Husky Soccer Field which recently had lights installed.
