SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Megan McKinstry scored a goal in the first half and added a second-half assist Monday, helping the Washington women's soccer team upset third-ranked Santa Clara 2-1 to snap the Broncos' 32-game home winning streak at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Huskies (4-0) have won the opening four games of a season for the first time in the 10-year history of the program. Santa Clara (2-1) lost at home for the first time since 1997. The Broncos, who advanced to the Final Four each of the last four seasons, had won their previous 45 regular-season games.
The victory was Washington's second over a ranked opponent during the last week, following a 1-0 home win over No. 17 Brigham Young last Tuesday. Santa Clara was the highest ranked team the Huskies have defeated since a 2-0 decision over No. 3 Duke on Sept. 18, 1993.
McKinstry opened the scoring at 17:17, booting in a shot during a scramble in front of the Bronco net. She helped the Huskies add to their 1-0 halftime advantage 18 minutes after intermission. McKinstry distributed a pass to Caroline Putz who one-timed it past SCU goalkeeper Crystal Gordon at 63:08.
The Broncos drew within 2-1 inside the final three minutes on an unassisted goal by Rachel Weber at 87:41.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo (Richland HS) registered seven saves for the Huskies who were outshot 21-11 Gordon had six saves for the Broncos.
"Anytime you beat Santa Clara, it's a huge deal," said Coach Lesle Gallimore whose Huskies were winless in their last six meetings with the Broncos. "It's a great win for our program, especially on the road. We're 4-0 and we've accomplished a couple of our goals so far, but it's a long season and a lot of things can happen."
In the midst of a seven-game road trip, the Huskies travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend for the Michigan Nike Invitational. Washington meets the host Wolverines on Friday and Ohio State on Sunday.
