Dawgs Down Irish in Five, 8-0
February 23, 2018 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Behind a big night from Sis Bates, No. 1 Washington softball picked up its 10th shutout win of the season in an 8-0 mercy-rule win over Notre Dame on Friday in the first game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Huskies improve to a perfect 14-0 on the year. The Dawgs were led by another strong pitching performance from Taran Alvelo, who tossed seven strikeouts on her way to improving her season record to 7-0. Sophomore short stop Bates went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in the win.
After making Notre Dame (6-6) go three up, three down to start the game, Washington got to work in the bottom of the first. Bates' single got the lineup fired up as the next four batters reached base. A single from Julia DePonte scored Bates and Kirstyn Thomas to get on the board first. An Irish error that failed to get Rachel Ogasawara out gave DePonte the chance to score, making it a 4-0 lead after the first.
In the top of the second, Alvelo struck out the three batters she faced. When the Huskies came up to bat, Taylor Van Zee doubled to lead off. She eventually scored on a wild pitch, pushing it to a 5-0 advantage.
Amirah Milloy came up big for the Dawgs in the third inning. Her double scored Taryn Atlee from first base. Kelly Burdick and Bates used their bunt game to get a few more runs on the board to go up 7-0, notching an RBI each.
The defense made some highlight plays in the top of the fifth. Milloy made a diving catch in right field for the first out, followed up by a strong play by Van Zee from third. Alvelo threw her seventh strikeout to end the frame. In the bottom of the fifth, Van Zee's double put her in scoring position when Bates came up to bat. She singled to bring in Van Zee and make it 8-0, ending the game by virtue of the mercy rule.
The tournament continues on Saturday for Washington with a doubleheader against No. 6 Texas A&M and Nebraska. The games will start at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. PT, respectively. Fans can watch the game on FloSoftball and follow along on Twitter at @UWSoftball.
