SEATTLE – The twenty-fourth season of Dempsey Indoor track and field starts Friday as the Huskies are set to host the UW Preview, which then rolls right into Mile City on Saturday.
Runnerspace will live stream the home opening weekend for the Dawgs. Friday's Preview begins at 12 noon and will run until approximately 7 p.m. Saturday will be all miles all day starting at 10:30 a.m., with the premier mile heats starting at 12 noon and ending at 1 p.m., followed by three more hours of men's mile sections.
Friday will be a full day of track and field action of all shapes and sizes, while Saturday focuses exclusively on the mile. This is the second year of "Mile City," a special event that will see hundreds of men and women, from youth to masters athletes, beginners to professionals and the best in the NCAA, run five-plus laps around the Dempsey to chase PRs.
The Dempsey has built a reputation over more than 20 years as the place to break four minutes in the mile in the U.S. and one of the best venues in the world. There have been 305 sub-four miles in the building since it opened in 2002, by 202 different men. Couple that with UW's recent run of success at the distance, where Nathan Green, and former Huskies Joe Waskom and Luke Houser won the past five NCAA mile or 1,500-meter titles, along with a women's school record mile of 4:28.14 last year by Chloe Foerster, and the Mile City moniker starts to stick.
Although this is the home opener for the Dawgs it is not the season opener, as UW sent groups to compete in two December meets, the Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener in Boston, and the Spokane Invitational. Those two meets already produced eleven new marks in the Husky top-10 lists, including a School Record from Nathan Green in the 3,000-meters in Boston.
