SEATTLE - California raced out to a big lead and cruised to a 10-1 win over the Washington baseball team Friday night in the first game of a three-game Pac-10 series at Husky Ballpark.
With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 14-16 overall and 5-5 in the Pac-10. Washington fell to 9-14 and 1-3 in the league.
Cal jumped on Washington starter Matt Massingale (2-3) from the start, scoring five in the first and three in the second, with all eight runs charged to Massingale. In the first, Bears shortstop Jason Williams hit a three-run double to cap the big inning. In the second, the first six Cal batters reached base before Randy Vanderplow came on to relieve.
Washington scored its first run in the third when catcher Tim Rice was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a Todd Linden single to make it 8-1. Clint Hoover's solo homer in the top of the fifth gave Cal a 9-1 edge.
In the sixth, Cal's Xavier Nady, the preseason national player of the year, added a solo home run, his 10th of the year, giving the Bears a 10-1.
Cal starter Trevor Hutchinson (3-3) picked up the victory, allowing only one run on nine hits and eight strikeouts.
The Huskies and Golden Bears continue the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and close it out Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's game will air live on KKOL AM-1300.
